It’s Not Too Early to Think about Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when Union veterans established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers.

By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

For us, the fund raising team at BVL, it also marks a remembrance and we pay deep respect and honor those veterans who came home disabled and severely injured.  It reminds us of why we do what we do.

For 75 years, BVL has been providing recreational therapy programs, services and equipment to VA hospitals across the country.   Our efforts help disabled American veterans get back to as normal and productive a life as possible.

And that’s where you come in

Many of you know that I never try to sell anything on this blog.

But today I am asking all of you, my friends and colleagues, to please help us to raise money for BVL over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.

Yes, I know it’s one of the worst bowling weekends of the year.

Yes I know it marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season and people run off to the beach, to the lake, to the mountains or anywhere the weekend takes them. “Everybody is gone.”

But I also know that lots of people, however; choose a “staycation” and just stay home with the family; it just might be a good time to take the family bowling if you remind them.

And if you tried to promote this time slot, using your digital media like email, Facebook and twitter, it just might get you some more traffic and you might raise some money for BVL which I know will make you feel good.

So here are three simple promotions you can do with your eyes closed

  1. Run your Quartermania program for the three days Saturday, Sunday and Monday and instead of charging your normal $5 entry fee, charge $6 and tell your customers that the extra buck goes to BVL. You don’t have to do it all day. Choose the hours when the promotion is valid. It’s up to you to customize it anyway you want to
  1. Bowl your third game FREE. Ask customers to pay $1.00 towards BVL to get a 3rd game FREE. By keeping them there just a little bit longer, they just might buy some more food and beverage.  Again, you can customize the hours for this one anyway you want
  1. Gimmee a Dollar Memorial Day and You Could Win ” Ask customers to give you a dollar for BVL and then ask them to fill out an entry form. (A great way to build more names into your data base.). Then at the end of the weekend, pick one name and give them $XX worth of free bowling. My suggestion would be at least $25 of free bowling or a “FREE Pizza, Pins N Pepsi outing.” You can put whatever conditions on the coupon you want like, when it is valid, when it expires, when it can be used, etc., but you know and I know the less restrictions the better the offer will be perceived.

And if none of these promo ideas hit your hot button, I’m sure you can come up with something else.

Start promoting this no later than May 15th and then the three days before the Friday of the Memorial Day weekend

If you don’t have one we have a BVL Collection Can for you so just email Mary Harrar, The Executive Director of BVL, mary@bvl.org  and she will get one out to you ASAP. And, of course, if you want some ideas or help with this promo just email me at fredkaplowitz@gmail.com or call me at 914 592 2836 (office).

Will you share this email or Facebook post with two friends who might benefit from this advice? I’m certain they’ll thank you for it once they’ve read it.
