Kaploe Marketing Group™ president Fred Kaplowitz was interviewed
for a marketing feature In the October 2002 issue of Bowling Center
Management. Following are some excerpts which will help you in your
business. Read Fred’s complete interview in the October 2002 BCM.
Why is marketing more important then ever before in the bowling business?
“First of all, we are not in the
bowling business anymore, we are in show business. At the recent Bowl
Expo, the number of "non bowling and non traditional" suppliers
in attendance just knocked me out. Even the traditional vendors spoke
in terms of their products offering benefits that would add "fun,
excitement and entertainment" to the bowling experience. When you
get into the lofty arena of competing for customers' discretionary income
every weekend and when the majority of your lineage is no longer league
"guaranteed lineage," you better pay a lot more attention
to attracting and retaining these customers simply because they have
more choices than ever before. In fact, we believe the weekend bowling
experience, for many open play customers is their second or third activity
of the night. People are simply obsessed with being entertained, relieving
stress and having fun. It has almost reached the stage of being an inalienable
right as defined by the US Constitution. That's why we started the kaploe
marketing group™. We understand the marriage of bowling and entertainment
and how bowling proprietors can successfully compete

.with some of these champagne competitors on a beer budget.”
Is customer service still king?
“No, it is not king. It is emperor and divine ruler. I have just
put on a round of customer service seminars for several chains as well
as for the Air Force. It is amazing to me how much people are focusing
on the customers. We finally get it. Now we have to inspect this every
day. Ask customers how we are doing, get their feedback and work hard
to make it better each time. This is the execution part of marketing.
This is where it all happens. This is where the customer decides to
come back again or not. Do we emphasize this? You bet! Not only is it
critical to the lifeblood of any business, but it is the muscle and
blood that either is in top shape to instill growth values or it’s
weak and flabby leading to a similar result.
